Jargon Decoder: Causal Validity
If a study found that students who wore red shoes did better on tests, it would not mean that wearing red shoes caused the higher test scores. It means research has uncovered a positive relationship, or correlation, between two variables. Can wearing red shoes raise test scores? To find out, researchers would need to design a study that tests for causal validity—evidence that one factor (wearing red shoes) causes another (improved performance on tests). To learn about the types of studies Edvantia can design for you, visit our Research & Evaluation Web pages.
