Statement in Response to the Financial Audit of the Tennessee
Department of Education by the Comptroller of the Treasury
August 7, 2009
In 2004 and again in 2005, Appalachia Educational Laboratory (AEL, the former corporate name for Edvantia) was proactive in bringing its error to light and was fully cooperative in setting this matter right. In 2007, the company provided full restitution for the amount at issue as well as paying the State of Tennessee's investigative and legal costs. In the meantime, Edvantia has continued its contracts and grants with the State of Tennessee to the State’s full satisfaction and with no further financial issues.
This billing error was limited to a limited period of time, to one type of grant with a specific contract limitation in one state in which Edvantia operates. The CEO and CFO who were at AEL during the periods at issue—from November 1, 2000 to June 30, 2003—are no longer at the company.
Under current leadership, the company continues to achieve its mission of applying its expertise in research, evaluation, professional development, and technical assistance to help schools and students succeed.
