Rural Schools Boost Math and Science
Edvantia Forum Shares Lessons Learned

Want to know how? Sign up to receive the proceedings of Edvantia’s celebration of 10 years of the Rural Systemic Initiative. This National Science Foundation program has helped many rural schools improve teaching and learning.

We held a forum on July 16 in Washington, DC, and now we’re preparing proceedings. The Forum on Leveraging a Legacy of Leadership in Mathematics and Science Education brought together rural practitioners from across the United States and representatives of federal agencies involved with math and science education. Together, the participants discussed lessons learned and what’s next.

Get on the mailing list and we’ll send you a PDF copy of the proceedings as soon as it’s ready.

Culturally Competent Evaluation:
New Resource Authored by Edvantia’s Dr. Laura Plybon

Responsibly evaluating programs that serve various cultural and ethnic groups requires an understanding of the demographics, values, and circumstances of those being served. A good starting point is a new online resource from the University of California-Davis. Edvantia’s Laura Plybon wrote the section on evaluating programs with African American populations, and she welcomes your questions, comments, and suggestions.

Highly Effective Teachers: More Than Highly Qualified

Discussions on teacher quality are moving from “highly qualified” to “highly effective” teachers. How could this impact teacher preparation and statewide systems of support for districts and schools? Dr. Sabrina Laine (National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality), Dr. Suzanne M. Wilson (Center for the Scholarship of Teaching, Michigan State University), Dr. Susan Bunch (Assistant Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Education), and others discussed the topic during ARCC’s June 26 webcast. Rural Blogging Continues!
The Center on Education Policy has released a report comparing rural and nonrural districts’ experiences with NCLB. For key findings and a link to the report, see Dr. Caitlin Howley’s June 18 “rural reminder” post on the AERA Rural Education Special Interest Group. Check it out.
